Susan Stephens (Geyer) was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and raised in Wichita Falls. She holds a BA in Art History from The University of Texas at Austin and an MA from The George Washington University. Susan has lived in Dallas since 1977, when her husband, Mark Geyer, began attending Baylor Dental School, and she started working at the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts as Assistant Curator of Education. During her time at the museum, she directed the Children’s Program and launched the “Go Van Gogh” outreach initiative, which continues today.
Susan and Mark have three adult children. While raising them, she played an active role in the Highland Park School District, founding an after-school arts program, serving on the Highland Park Arts Board, and substitute teaching across all school levels. A dedicated member of her church, Susan has served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, and participates in Bible Studies.
A lifelong arts enthusiast, Susan has been deeply involved in the cultural scene for over 40 years. She enjoys attending operas, symphonies, chamber music performances, theater, and visiting museums and gardens. She served for seven years on the Sweet Briar College Arts Board and was the president of her class of 1974 during the pivotal Saving Sweet Briar Campaign.
Susan’s passion for opera and classical music is central to her life. She is an active leader at The Dallas Opera, where she serves on the Board, as Secretary for the Executive Committee, Chair of the Education Committee, and a member of the Development Committee. She recently completed a two-year term as president of the Dallas Opera Guild and is also a member of the Trustee Council for Opera America. Additionally, she serves on the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Board and its Education Committee.
Her community involvement extends to the Dallas Arboretum and its Women’s Council, Dallas Kappa Kappa Gamma, the Junior League of Dallas, and various art and history museums throughout Texas. In her free time, Susan enjoys traveling, reading, hiking, swimming, and spending time with family and friends. She is honored to be part of the American Friends of the LacMus Festival.
